Summary of Position
Position essential in the implementation, supervision, and administration of the Fair Defense Act for all Montgomery County Courts.
Education, Experience and Skill Requirements
• High School Diploma
• Bilingual (English & Spanish) preferred to interpret between court personnel, jail officials, and inmates with limited English proficiency
• Basic Word processing and spreadsheet experience-ability to enter data and produce basic documents
• Computer skills and knowledge of relevant software including Word, Excel, and Outlook
• Knowledge of office related products - basic computer operation, copier, calculator
• Must have excellent communication skills with ability to deal with public in difficult situations
• Team oriented mind set and ability to work independently
• Strong organization skills with attention to detail
• Requires data entry and retrieval
Primary Job Duties
• Conduct interviews of defendants in court, jail, and office walk-ins to determine qualification for court appointed counsel
• Coordinate with other team members to complete various tasks on rotating schedule, including periodic weekend shifts. Variable hours depending on rotating schedule 7-4, 8-5.
• Position is deemed essential personnel, work days will include 2-3 county holidays per year and county shut downs.
• In person interviews to complete affidavit of indigence and assist courts in setting bond amounts
• Respond to inmate and out of county correspondence regarding requests for court appointed counsel
• Respond to attorney and public inquiries, by phone, email, or walk-ins, regarding appointment of counsel
• Research records from jail, District Attorney, District Clerk, County Clerk, and Office of Indigent Defense programs for required information
• Conduct jail record reviews to insure that all detained persons have an opportunity to apply for court appointed counsel
• Maintain electronic and hard copy filing systems, general clerical duties
• Provide basic interpretation assistance for court staff with Spanish speaking defendants to obtain licensed interpreter services.

After receiving a conditional offer of employment, applicant must pass a drug screen (1/2 cost = $20.00, responsibility of applicant) and may need a physical agility test (1/2 cost = $22.50, responsibility of applicant) before becoming an employee of Montgomery County.
