Senior Engineer – Rules and Standards Department

Are you passionate about developing Rules that advance the safety of life and protect the environment? The Rules & Standards Department is seeking highly motivated Engineers to lead strategic Rule Development projects. You will serve as both project lead and primary author, collaborating across ABS Technology, Engineering, and other key functions to create, refine, and future-proof the ABS Rules. Your work will span a diverse range of topics, including:

  • Business-critical notations that differentiate ABS in the marketplace
  • Core, conventional requirements that form the foundation of classification
  • Emerging technologies (e.g., new energy solutions, digitalization, autonomy, advanced materials)
  • Topics within and beyond your current expertise

What You Will Do:

As a Senior Engineer in the Rules & Standards Department, you will:

  • Act as project lead and primary author for major Rule development projects
  • Develop Proposed Rule Changes
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts across ABS (Technology, Engineering, Survey, Sustainability, etc)
  • Engage external stakeholders (e.g., Technical Committee Members, clients, Flag Administrations, etc)
  • Identify operational readiness needs; initiate development of Freedom and Engineering Software updates, training, quality system documents, etc.
  • Maintain awareness of Rule development needs and assist in development of short- and long-term plans
  • Ensure the technical quality, content, consistency, continuity and timeliness of all projects within assigned area of responsibility

What You Will Need:

Education and Experience

  • B.S. degree in Civil, Structural Engineering, Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, Marine, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering or other related disciplines; an M.S. is preferred.
  • Currently a Senior Engineer or minimum two (2) years experience working as an ABS Engineer II

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Command of the English language.
  • Knowledge of related technical disciplines.
  • Knowledge of applicable Rules and regulations and the impact of Rule applications and interpretations.
  • Knowledge of company business policies and procedures.
  • The human relations skills necessary to maintain positive relationships with stakeholders and peers.
  • Ability to develop and implement logical solutions to complex problems.
  • Ability to undertake short- and long-term planning to provide for efficient and effective scheduling of work assignments.
  • Needs to be familiar with the ABS Health, Safety, Quality & Environmental Management System.

Reporting Relationships:

The incumbent generally reports to a Department Head or Manager but may report to others depending on the specifics of the assignment. There are no direct reports for this position.
