Position Overview:

Under the Supervision of the Alternative Mosquito Control & Applied Research (AMCAR) Entomologist at the Mosquito Vector Control Division, the Field Technician's duties are to assist with ongoing field, insectary, and laboratory-based tasks.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Maintains insectary care and assists in insectary research projects.
  • Assists in the placement and collection of traps and maintains the trapping equipment.
  • Assists in sample processing and basic identification, including but not limited to mosquito and other vector identification to species.
  • Assists in laboratory work, including preparing solutions and assisting in DNA extractions.
  • Improves operations around traps by designing forms and assists in identifying new sites.
  • Aids the T&E Section of AMCAR for other duties as needed.

Requirements
Education:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
Licenses/Certifications Required:
  • Current and valid Driver's License (TX upon hire) with good driving record.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Basic skills: Microsoft Windows, MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Outlook.
  • Basic word processing and data entry.
  • Knowledge of biology and habitats.
  • Basic knowledge of integrated pest management and vector-focused public health.

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work:
  • This is a regular - full time position.
  • 40 hours per week.
  • Hours may vary depending on mosquito-borne disease activity.
Work Environment:
  • Laboratory - requires a consistent method to retain genetic quality in sample processing and DNA extraction. Involves heavy cleaning, concern over contamination, and adherence to MVCD protocol.
  • Field -requires driving a county vehicle to collect mosquito samples in a variety of public and private properties located in a variety of urban and natural environments which may include areas of high heat and humidity, spoils site, ship channel location, asphalt, concrete, dirt streets, etc.
Physical Demands:
  • Must be able to lift, bend, stoop, and walking up inclines.
  • Must be able to lift up to 70 lbs.
  • Must be in good physical health; able to tolerate high heat and high humidity for extended periods of time while working in a variety of habitats including: spoils site, ship channel location, asphalt, concrete, dirt streets, etc.
