Welders use accepted trade methods and a variety of manual welding processes, for example, several different gas torch processes, various electric are processes including inert gas shielded ones, or a number of both kinds of processes, to weld all types of commonly used metals and alloys of various sizes, shapes, and thicknesses, including dissimilar metals such as copper to steel. Welders also assure complete penetration when required as well as complete fusion of base and filler metals. They control the metals and the welding techniques to prevent distortion or burning of the metals, and to meet weld dimension, tolerance, strength, and other requirements. The welds are made in all positions including flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead.

Key Responsibilities:

• Process Mastery: Apply manual welding processes such as oxy-acetylene and electric arc welding (e.g., gas metal-arc, shielded metal-arc, and flux-cored arc welding) with a focus on carbon steel applications.
• Material Specialization: Weld carbon steel components 20" and down of various sizes, shapes, and thicknesses, including pipe and structural elements, ensuring strong, defect-free joints.
• Precision & Control: Control heat input and welding techniques to prevent warping or burn-through, ensuring welds meet exacting standards for dimension, tolerance, and mechanical strength.
• Planning & Layout: Interpret blueprints, sketches, drawings, specifications, and work orders to plan and lay out welding tasks accurately.
• Electrode Selection: 6010, 7018 Choose appropriate welding electrodes or filler rods based on carbon steel type, thickness, and welding position.
• Complex Welds: Perform challenging welds in confined or hard-to-reach areas that require high precision and strength, including pressure-rated welds.
• Quality Assurance: Ensure final welds are free from cracks, porosity, slag inclusions, or other defects. Welds may be subject to rigorous inspections such as radiographic, magnetic particle, dye penetrant, and hydrostatic testing.
• Problem Solving: Collaborate with supervisors to resolve unusual welding challenges and ensure compliance with project specifications and safety standards.
