Correctional Officer Position

Join our dedicated team in maintaining safety and security within our correctional facilities. As a member of the Harris County Correctional Services, you will play a crucial role in overseeing the well-being and behavior of detainees, ensuring order and discipline while supporting rehabilitation and reintegration efforts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Security and Monitoring: Maintain the safety and security of the facility by conducting regular patrols and inspections. Monitor inmate activities to prevent disturbances, escapes, or other incidents.
  • Inmate Interaction: Supervise the daily activities of inmates, ensuring they adhere to facility rules and regulations. Facilitate communication and resolve conflicts when necessary to maintain a peaceful environment.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of inmate behavior, incidents, and any rule infractions. Prepare detailed reports and documentation as required by facility policies and procedures.
  • Search and Inspection: Conduct searches of inmates, their living quarters, and common areas to prevent contraband and ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Emergency Response: Respond promptly and effectively to emergencies, such as riots, fires, or medical incidents, following established protocols to protect inmates, staff, and visitors.
  • Rehabilitation Support: Encourage and support rehabilitation initiatives by facilitating inmate participation in educational programs, work assignments, and other rehabilitative services.
  • Team Collaboration: Work collaboratively with other correctional staff, law enforcement agencies, and support services to ensure efficient facility operations and inmate management.

Qualifications

- Education: High school diploma or equivalent is required. Higher education or relevant certifications are advantageous.

- Experience: Prior experience in law enforcement, military, or security-related fields is preferred but not mandatory.

- Skills: Strong communication, observation, and conflict resolution skills. Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions under pressure.

- Physical Requirements: Must meet the physical standards necessary to perform the essential duties of the position, including standing for extended periods, lifting up to 50 pounds, and responding to emergencies.

- Background Check: Candidates must pass a thorough background investigation and drug screening.

- Certification: Successful completion of Correctional Officer training and any required state certifications prior to completion of probationary period.

Working Conditions

- This position involves working in a secure correctional environment.

- Shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays, is required to maintain 24/7 facility operations.

- Interaction with individuals who may exhibit challenging behavior is a regular occurrence.
