Security Officer

At Houston Methodist, the Security Officer position is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors by patrolling and monitoring hospital premises and personnel. This position provides assistance with personal protection, traffic control, and emergency response services. The Security Officer position may employ Houston Methodist-approved defensive tactics to ensure patient, staff, and visitor safety.

The Security Officer position may also serve in the following capacities:

  • Maintains high customer satisfaction while providing the highest level of safety and security to patients, visitors, staff, and assets.
  • Uses professional telephone etiquette. Communicates effectively with management and coworkers on tasks, processes, and procedures.
  • Actively responds to requests for personal security coverage, assistance with directions, information, and guidance.
  • Promotes a positive work environment and contributes to a dynamic, team-focused work unit that actively helps one another to achieve optimal department results. Contributes towards improvement of department scores for employee engagement, i.e. peer-to-peer accountability.
  • Secures premises and personnel by patrolling facilities; monitoring surveillance cameras; monitoring access points permitting entry as needed, which may include morgue area.
  • Responds to all radio dispatches, answers calls and complaints, and accurately assesses, responds timely, provides appropriate assistance, and makes recommendations as needed for all emergent situations.
  • Accurately communicates and/or generates and completes reports by recording occurrences, information, observations, surveillance activities, and conducting witness interviews.
  • Responds immediately to all emergency codes and takes appropriate action.
  • Maintains a safe environment, following all policies and procedures for safety, hazardous material, emergency preparedness, and HIPAA.
  • Prevents loss and damage by reporting irregularities, informing violators of policy and procedures.
  • Utilizes and maintains HM and department equipment according to manufacturer specifications.
  • Utilizes resources with cost effectiveness and value creation in mind. Self-motivated to independently manage time effectively and prioritize daily tasks, assisting coworkers as needed.
  • Implements actions that promote workplace safety culture and proactively prevents workplace violence.
  • Supports hospital and department goals and offers innovative solutions through participation in department projects. Assumes responsibility for self-growth and development by participating in in-services programs and continuing education. Ensures own career discussions occur with appropriate management. Completes and updates the My Development Plan on an ongoing basis.

The Security Officer position requires the following qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent education (examples include: GED, verification of homeschool equivalency, partial or full completion of post-secondary education, etc.)
  • Criminal justice, security, or related experience preferred

The Security Officer position must also meet the following licensing requirements:

  • SECUR-N - Security Officer Non-Commissioned - State Licensure -- submission of application within 14 days of hire date, and obtained within one year of employment within 14 days OR
  • SECUR-C - Security Officer Commissioned - State Licensure -- Level 3 or Personal Protection Officer Level 4 licensure AND
  • IAHSS-B - Certified Security Officer-Basic (IAHSS) within 90 days OR
  • IAHSS-A - Certified Security Officer-Advanced (IAHSS) within 90 days OR
  • IAHSS-S - Certified Security Officer-Supervisor (IAHSS) within 90 days AND
  • DL - Driver License - State Licensure -- Upon hire must have a valid Driver's License. Must obtain a Texas DL within 90 days within 90 days AND
  • NVCRISIS - Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (CPI) within 60 days

The Security Officer position also requires the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through on-going skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations
  • Sufficient proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing the English language necessary to perform the essential functions of this job, especially with regard to activities impacting patient or employee safety or security
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members, and co-workers in a manner consistent with a customer service focus and application of positive language principles
  • Must have the ability to multitask and function calmly in stressful situations
  • Must possess strong customer service skills
  • Proficient computer skills including, but not limited to, knowledge of Microsoft Office software and Webmail
  • Knowledgeable of all Public Safety Policies and Procedures
  • Understand HIPAA and Patient confidentiality compliance
  • Demonstrates emergency preparedness knowledge

Houston Methodist The Woodlands opened in 2017 as the eighth hospital in the Houston Methodist system. This 187-bed, 470,000-square-foot, full-service, acute care hospital offers many of the same services as our flagship hospital in the Texas Medical Center. Also on the $380 million hospital campus, located at the intersection of I-45 and TX 242, is a medical office building, which opened in 2016. Medical Office Building 1 includes a breast care center, cancer center & infusion center, orthopedics & sports medicine, rehabilitation services, wellness services, and an outpatient laboratory in addition to multi-specialty physician practices. A second medical office building and 785-car parking garage opened in 2018.
