JOB DESCRIPTION:
Promote positive public relations between the school district and community. Prepare and provide information to the public about the activities, goals, and policies of the school district. Distribute pertinent information about the district and its activities to employees.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Direct and manage the district's Communications Department.
  2. Ensure that communications operations are supportive of the instructional goals of the district.
  3. Promote a positive caring climate for learning.
  4. Deal sensitively and fairly with persons from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  5. Employ effective interpersonal skills.
  6. Assess and respond to needs related to job responsibilities.
  7. Contribute to the recommendation of sound policies directed toward program improvement.
  8. Design feasible projects for implementing innovations.
  9. Prepare, review, and revise job descriptions in Communications Department.
  10. Develop training options and/or improvement plans to ensure the best operation in the area of communications.
  11. Plan, implement, and support district programs for recruitment, selection, orientation, and assignment of district employees.
  12. Evaluate job performance of employees to ensure effectiveness.
  13. Make sound recommendations relative to personnel placement, transfer, retention, and dismissal.
  14. Ensure that programs are cost effective and funds are managed prudently.
  15. Compile budgets and cost estimates based upon documented program needs.
  16. Implement the policies established by Federal and state law, State Board of Education rules, and the local Board policy in the communications area.
  17. Assume responsibility for compiling, maintaining, and filing all reports, records, and other documents required.
  18. Demonstrate knowledge of the district's student management policies and expected student behavior.
  19. Take the initiative to develop needed professional skills appropriate to job assignments.
  20. Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible and serve as a role model for all district staff.
  21. Serve as the information liaison between the school system and the community at large.
  22. Articulate the district's mission and goals in the area of communications to the community and solicit its support in realizing the mission.
  23. Demonstrate awareness of district-community needs and initiate activities to meet those identified needs.
  24. Demonstrate the use of appropriate and effective techniques for community and parent involvement.
  25. Assist the superintendent in developing and publicizing reports related to the performance of the district and articulation of district goals and objectives.
  26. Assist school personnel in publicizing and promoting any performances, exhibitions, displays, or special programs sponsored by the schools.
  27. Facilitate the implementation of marketing agreements by: Developing and maintaining signage and digital content in accordance with stadium marketing agreements; Obtaining sponsor approval on marketing signage and digital content
  28. Prepare and edit special publications such as the monthly staff newsletter, recruitment brochures, and other publications.
  29. Set the tone for all communications of the District by: Writing and editing information to be provided to the media/public; Working with campuses to establish procedures for communicating with the media/parents/public; Assisting with the training of campus and district staff that interact with the public; Initiating programs and publications for communicating with the public; Assisting campuses during a crisis situation; Acting as spokesperson for the District, when necessary; Acting as photographer for the District; Objectively advising Superintendent/Cabinet; Working with media relations; Developing and maintaining current information on district's website; Supervising the graphic arts supervisor, the communications assistant, and the print shop staff; Keeping abreast of current information and trends; using focus groups or other survey approaches to understand customer needs/satisfaction and to improve organization; Networking and receiving training in growth areas
  30. Maintain regular attendance.
  31. Perform other duties as assigned.
EXPERIENCE:
  • Three years of successful experience in an educational leadership position
  • Successful experience in written, technological, and verbal skills in educational setting
  • Successful experience in development of positive public relations in educational setting
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
  • Master's degree in English, journalism, communications, or related field
Special Knowledge/Skills:
  • Excellent public relations, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees, parents, or the public
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral forms with all levels of management, both internal and external to the district
  • Effective organizational and supervisory skills

Occasional district travel; prolonged and irregular hours.

PAY GRADE: AB - 9 - Minimum pro-rated salary - $155,606
