Job Description

Purpose:

Under the direct supervision of a licensed Pharmacist, performs the assigned duties involving, but not limited to, the following:

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

The Pharmacy Technician is charged with and responsible for:
Receives and interprets medication orders or prescriptions and obtains medications for the pharmacist's review in preparation for dispensing.
Appropriately and accurately operates the Pharmacy computer system and other related computer programs and equipment for the completion of assigned tasks.
Performs pharmacy-related clerical tasks.
Performs medication-related activities involved in the unit-dose drug distribution system, including obtaining medications for patient cassette filling, and exchange of cassettes.
Review stock of medication to insure the removal of expired and soon to expire medications.
Assists in maintaining adequate levels of inventory in inpatient and outpatient pharmacy.
Assists in the maintenance of the pharmacy stockroom; including ordering, receiving, and distributing of drugs and supplies, as needed.
Maintains and restocks various medication carts and automated dispensing machines, including code cart tray, medication boxes, etc.
Assists in the filling of floor stock requisitions for various nursing units.
Delivers floor stock of medications, including controlled substances, to nursing units, as needed.
Pre-package medications for dispensing to the various nursing care areas.
Assists in monthly nursing unit medication area inspections.
Assists the pharmacist in any other pharmacy-related duties.
Responsibilities with respect to the automated dispensing machines (ADM) and under the direction of a pharmacist:
Maintenance of the medication and user database in the ADMs.
Troubleshooting of any issues associated with the ADMs
Understanding the policies and procedures of the ADMs
Assisting users with the use of the ADMs (removal, return, wastage, discrepancy resolution, etc.).
Review of activity, refill, discrepancy, and loading/unloading reports to validate appropriate usage of the ADMs

Minimum Qualifications

Effective April 25, 2021, all new hires into the title of Pharmacy Technician must be licensed to practice as a
Registered Pharmacy Technician by the NYSED.

Department Preferences
Ability to perform basic mathematical computations; ability to work and communicate effectively with others; ability to organize and manage time wisely.
